Tips for using the collet of a milling machine: what is a cylindrical milling cutter? What's the difference with end mills?

LONNZ is a spring collet manufacturer with 16 years of professional collet production experience, with an accuracy of 0.003mm and a service life of 600000 times. It selects high-quality spring steel, introduces Japanese technology and imported equipment, CNC composite machining, and forming, can provide collet auxiliary design and peripheral accessories, one-stop purchase!

Spring collet, also known as milling machine collet, is a kind of cylinder-shaped clamp used to fix the drill or milling cutter on the milling machine, with high precision, easy operation, long service life, and other excellent performance. Longzhouli has strict quality standard requirements for the concentricity, conicity, finish, dimensional accuracy, heat treatment process and raw materials of the chuck products of milling machine, which are well made, cost-effective, large clamping force, comprehensive specifications, and high precision, widely used in milling, boring, drilling, tapping, CNC, Carving, spindle machine, and other processing operations.

So what is a cylindrical milling cutter? A milling cutter is a rotary cutter with one or more teeth for milling. We are more commonly used for horizontal milling machine machining plane, 45-degree chamfer milling cutter, cutter teeth distributed on the circumference of the milling cutter is cylindrical milling cutter. The cylindrical milling cutter can be divided into straight teeth and spiral teeth according to the tooth shape, and coarse teeth and fine teeth according to the number of teeth. The spiral coarse tooth milling cutter has few teeth, high tooth strength and large chip capacity, which is suitable for rough machining and fine-tooth milling cutter for fine machining. Multiple milling cutters can be combined for wide plane milling, and the combination must be left and right staggered spiral teeth.

Besides cylindrical milling cutter, the end milling cutter is also commonly used. So, what's the difference between the cylindrical milling cutter and end milling cutter? The most direct difference is that the cylindrical milling cutter should be used on the cutter rod, and the end milling cutter can be used when it is directly inserted into the taper hole of the spindle. The end milling cutter is mainly used to process grooves and step surfaces. The cutter teeth are on the circumference and end face, and they cannot be fed along the axial direction in general operation. When there is a center end tooth on the end mill, it can be fed axially. Moreover, the application range and requirements of high-speed steel end mills are relatively wide, even if the selection of cutting conditions is a little improper, there is not much problem. Although the carbide end milling cutter has good wear resistance in high-speed cutting, its application range is not as wide as that of high-speed steel end milling cutter, and the cutting conditions must strictly meet the use requirements of the cutter.

LONNZ suggests that you should choose the cylindrical milling cutter or the end milling cutter when you use it. It depends on the materials we process and the amount of processing. At the same time, it should be matched with the collet of the high-precision milling machine. Also welcome to contact LONNZ, the high precision collet expert and reliable partner around you!
